Embodiment Construction

[0076] refer to figure 1 , as shown, the network 10 includes network stations 12a, 12b, . . . 12k connected to a transmission medium or channel 14, such as a power line (PL). During communication over the transmission medium 14 between at least two network stations 12, for example, a first network station 12a acts as a sending network station (transmitter) and at least one second network station (e.g. 12b) acts as a receiving network station (receiver). ). Each network station 12 includes a logical link control (LLC) unit 16 for connecting to data link users (eg, terminal equipment such as computer hosts), cable modems or other equipment (not shown). The network station 12 further includes: a medium access control (MAC) unit 18 connected to the LLC unit 16 through a data interface 20; a physical layer (PHY) unit 22 connected to the MAC unit 18 through a MAC to PHY I / O bus 24; and An analog front end (AFE) unit 26 . AFE unit 26 is connected to PHY unit 22 through separate A...

Abstract

A scheme for supporting both centralized and distributed shared medium access control in a CSMA network (700). A master device (702) exchanges connection control messages with a slave device (704) using contention-oriented access to establish a connection and a session of periodic contention-free intervals. The contention-free intervals (722) alternate with contention-oriented intervals (725) according to the timing parameters specified by the connection control massages. Each of the contention-free intervals (722) is divided into slots (727), the master device (702) transmitting a downstream frame and the slave device (704) transmitting an upstream frame in a following slot if the downstream frame indicates the following: a source address matching that of the master device, a contention-free access at a highest priority and a connection number corresponding to the connection established between the master device and the slave device. Master control is passed from one device to another device during the contention-free interval using a master flag for to indicate which device has master control and a control flag to indicate the direction in which master control is being passed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a medium access control (MAC) protocol in a CSMA network. Background technique [0002] Shared media access networks employ some media access control protocols to control access to the physical media. The shared medium access mechanism may be polling, time division multiple access (TDMA), carrier sense multiple access (CSMA), or some other shared access protocol. The polling method utilizes a centralized master station to periodically query other (slave) stations, giving other nodes explicit permission to send information on the medium. In the time division multiple access protocol, the network host broadcasts a frame synchronization signal before each round of messages to synchronize the clocks of all stations. After synchronization, each station sends signals within a uniquely assigned time period. In the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA / CA) method with anti-collision, each station must listen to the signal tran...
