A top drive is a mechanical device on a drilling rig that provides clockwise torque to the drill string to drill a borehole. It is an alternative to the rotary table and kelly drive. It is located at the swivel's place below the traveling block and moves vertically up and down the derrick.

Methods and apparatus for handling and drilling with tubulars or casing

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for handling tubulars and drilling with tubulars such as casing into a formation. In one aspect of the invention, the apparatus comprises a circulating head and a cementing head operatively connectible to a gripping member. The circulating head is used to circulate drilling fluid while drilling with casing, and the cementing head is used to cement the casing string within the formation at a desired depth. The present invention also relates to methods and apparatus for isolating a tensile load from a drilling apparatus rotated by a top drive. In one aspect, the present invention provides a load isolator apparatus having an isolator body operatively connected to the top drive and a torque body at least partially disposed in the isolator body. In operation, the bearing assembly transfers the tensile load from the torque body to the isolator body.

Casing pushdown and rotating tool

A pushdown and rotating tool for holding, pushing, and rotating a floated casing string into a wellbore is provided. The tool includes a mandrel, a housing attached about the external diameter of the mandrel and shaped to receive a collared casing, a jaws assembly within the housing, and an automatic hydraulics system for actuating the jaws. The mandrel and housing are connected such that they can move telescopically relative to one another, and such motion actuates the jaws. The tool has a threaded coupling for a top drive connection, the top drive providing the pushdown and rotational forces which are transmitted to the casing by way of the tool. The mandrel also has an internal passage-way through its length and a male connection at the bottom. The tool facilitates floating a casing into a substantially horizontal wellbore when the casing becomes buoyant and tries to "kick back" out of the well, or when the floated casing becomes stuck and requires rotation to extend beyond the obstacle.

Mast and trolley arrangement for mobile multi-function rig

An improved mast arrangement for a mobile multi-function rig has a winch line extending from an upper end of the mast and a traveling block supported thereon. A trolley mountable on the mast is adapted for coupling to the traveling block. The trolley works primarily as a guide for a given load, and therefore is of a lightweight design since loads mounted to the trolley are transferred directly to the traveling block and the supporting winch line. The trolley provides the capability to readily switch between various rig operations, including manipulating coiled tubing with an injector, setting surface casing using a top drive, operating the winch and traveling block for joined pipe operations, and interchanging between top drive and joined pipe operations without removing the top drive from the mast or rig. The rig can run deeper joined pipe applications than previous mobile rigs by providing means for employing the top drive, namely the trolley is adapted to counteract the torsion exerted by the top drive during operation. The trolley is able to work the entire length of the mast after quickly parking the injector near the bottom of the mast. The winch and traveling block have unobstructed travel along the entire length of the mast without disengaging the trolley from the mast and with the injector parked near the bottom end.

Simultaneous tubular handling system

A system and method for building and handling oilfield tubular stands while drilling operations are simultaneously and independently occurring with one drilling deck, one derrick, and one rotary system. An offline guided path horizontal to vertical arm lifts and moves in the same plane tubulars stored horizontally on the catwalk and positions the tubulars vertically directly into a preparation hole for assembling and disassembling tubular stands while online drilling operations are simultaneously being conducted. A stand arm lifts and lowers the tubulars into and out of the adjustable preparation hole, and transports the tubulars for storage to an auxiliary tubular racking station in the upper part of the derrick. A bridge racker crane moves tubular stands from the auxiliary tubular racking station to the top drive or another tubular racking station.

Methods and apparatus for connecting tubulars while drilling

The present invention provides an apparatus that permits sections of tubulars to be connected to or disconnected from a string of pipe during a drilling operation. The apparatus further permits the sections of drill pipe to be rotated and to be axially translated during the connection or disconnection process. The apparatus further allows for the continuous circulation of fluid to and through the tubular string during the makeup or breakout process. The apparatus defines a rig assembly comprising a top drive mechanism, a rotary drive mechanism, and a fluid circulating device. Rotation and axial movement of the tubular string is alternately provided by the top drive and the rotary drive. Additionally, continuous fluid flow into the tubular string is provided through the circulation device and alternately through the tubular section once a connection is made between an upper tubular connected to the top drive mechanism and the tubular string.

Fill up tool and mud saver for top drives

InactiveUS6571876B2Prevent leakageMinimal drilling fluid lossDrilling rodsFluid removalTop driveEngineering
A tubular tool body carried at the end of a drilling rig top drive is received within a drill string being used as a landing string to position casing in a wellbore. External threads on the tool body can be mated with the box threads of the drill string to secure the top drive and drill string together for simultaneous drill string movement and fluid circulation. An annular seal carried about the tool body engages and seals with the internal wall of the drill pipe to prevent drilling fluid leakage when the tool body is received within the drill pipe without thread engagement. The tool has an internal check valve that opens to allow back flow of drilling fluid that may be displaced from the drill pipe as the pipe is lowered into the well. The check valve prevents standing fluid in the top drive from spilling onto the rig floor when the tool is withdrawn from the drill string. Pump pressure applied through the top drive axially moves the check valve against a biasing spring to open a bypass through the wall of the tool to permit forward circulation through the drill string and casing. The spring bias force is sufficient to withstand the hydrostatic force exerted by the standing column of fluid in the top drive and associated piping.
