Problems solved by technology

[0006] However, when laser marking is used, this can create a rough pattern and leave irreversible ablation marks on the gemstone, causing permanent damage and potentially devaluing the gemstone
[0007] When marked with an ion beam, this technique can be used to inscribe fine patterns on the surface of gemstones that can be 1,000 times finer than those marked with lasers, however, the process is usually relatively slow and requires precision

Embodiment Construction

[0044] In order to gain a more precise understanding of the above invention, a more particular description of the invention briefly described above will be rendered by reference to specific embodiments of the invention that are illustrated in the appended drawings. The drawings presented herein may not be drawn to scale and any references to dimensions in the drawings or in the following description are specific to the disclosed embodiments.

[0045] According to the invention, optically invisible markings are applied to the surface of the diamond.

[0046] Using a focused ion beam (FIB) writing process, which changes the optical properties of the diamond. The main optical property or characteristic that is altered is the diamond's index of refraction.

[0047] This change cannot be discerned optically, and thus the marking cannot be discerned, and thus is not optically visible even under magnification of viewing with a magnifying glass.

Abstract

A process of forming an optically non-detectable identification mark (110) includes the steps of applying a mark at a surface of a diamond (200) using a focused ion beam (FIB) write process in order to provide an optically non-detectable identification mark (110), the identification mark is formed by changing the optical property of a part of the diamond material at the outer surface of the diamond to form a mark part; wherein the mark is optically invisible, and wherein the mark is visible by an imaging method that provides an observable contrast between portions of the diamond having altered optical properties and unmarked portions of the diamond. The marking process may help prevent forgery of precious articles and help prevent theft events. The invention further discloses a mark, a diamond and a process for viewing the mark on the diamond.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of marking of solid materials, and more particularly to the marking of precious stones including diamonds. Background technique [0002] Gem identification and grading have long been established by international standard laboratories including GIA, IGI, Gem-A and NGTC. Identification and grading results are usually stored on electronic media such as hard drives, tapes, CDs, etc., and paper certificates are issued with the corresponding gemstones. [0003] When the certificate is lost, or when the gemstone is mixed with other gemstones, the gemstone's identity is lost and recertification is required. [0004] Direct marking of gemstones, including diamonds, is usually a straightforward way to avoid this and allow for re-marking. [0005] Conventional techniques in the art for marking gemstones, including diamonds, include laser marking and ion beam marking. [0006] However, when laser marking is used, this ...
