Embodiment 1
[0086] Table 1 provides a comparison of two exemplary formulations of the invention. Soluble zinc analysis was performed as described below, and the results showed that Formulation A (pH 5.9) had a significantly higher soluble zinc content than Formulation B (pH 6.7).

Embodiment 2
[0090] The soluble zinc concentration of various zinc-citrate formulations was evaluated as follows. A 0.906% w / v sodium chloride solution was prepared in distilled water. Seven test samples were prepared by combining zinc oxide and zinc citrate trihydrate in a sodium chloride solution in specific ratios to achieve a zinc to citrate molar ratio of 10:1 to 1.5:1. All samples were adjusted to have a neat zinc concentration of 0.5% w / w. The samples were stirred for 2-5 days. After centrifugation, the supernatants were analyzed for soluble zinc.
[0091] The results are shown in the table below. A 2:1 ratio of zinc to citrate has been shown to produce the highest concentration of soluble zinc.

Embodiment 3
[0095] Zinc uptake in skin in vitro was evaluated using the following test procedure. In vitro skin (IMS Inc., Portland, ME) was cut into uniform circles between 10 and 14 mm in diameter, such as by using a cork punch. The in vitro skin circles were rinsed (entirely) 3 times with hexane for 5 minutes. Air dry to evaporate hexane. In vitro skin was soaked overnight in sterile and clarified saliva in disposable polystyrene Falcon tubes (manufacturing code 352057). 1 mL of saliva per tissue was used and the process was performed in triplicate. Saliva was aspirated and 1 mL of the 1 :2 paste slurry was added and incubated in a 37°C water bath for 2 minutes. The slurry was aspirated and rinsed 3 times with 5 mL of deionized water for 10 seconds each, using a vortexer to mix. Transfer the tissue into new polystyrene Falcon tubes (manufacturing code 352095). 1 mL of concentrated nitric acid was added to the tissue and it was incubated overnight. Tissue should dissolve completel...
