[0111] In a study of the biology of melanin transfer, the present inventors investigated the potential role of members of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family in this process. In this application a novel mechanism controlling the transfer of melanin from human skin melanocytes to human skin keratinocytes is described. This includes the action of BMP6, which can stimulate this process in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, a selective BMP6 antagonist (sclerostin) inhibits BMP6-induced melanosome transfer and blocks the production of BMP6-induced nanotubes (called filopodia), as scanned for human melanocytes Evidenced by electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.
