Problems solved by technology

A disadvantage of this method is that on the first interface it operates at a coarser granularity at the level of Pulse Code Modulation (PCM), which can be as low as 64Kbit / s instead of 2.048Mbit / s or even only 1.544Mbit / s the s
Another disadvantage is that it requires each PCM signal to be configured and assigned to a specific part of the frame; for large frames this results in a large amount of configuration data
[0008] Another drawback of these two known systems is that they do not offer the possibility for adaptive modulation, that is, the rate on the packet stream cannot be changed without the frame structure being reconfigured
This lack of flexibility can lead to unnecessary loss of business

Embodiment Construction

[0049] For the sake of simplicity, the system and method according to the present invention and disclosed herein is referred to as a "flat MUX" because it is unstructured and can directly multiplex several Type E channels and / or a configurable number of PDH channels. Using and demultiplexing into a single composite serial bit stream, while also using parts of the composite bandwidth, enables variable bit pipelining for the type of packet traffic.

[0050] The flat MUX is of course not intended to exist in isolation, but is a particularly efficient component of the overall telecommunication system, accommodating different channel technologies and framing formats.

[0051] Several values are given for various aspects of embodiments of the invention shown and discussed below. These are just one example of possible implementations and can be varied by an experienced telecommunications system designer as required for a given implementation. This even applies to the number of PDH...

Abstract

A multiplexer / demultiplexer (MUX / DEMUX) system for multiplexing and demultiplexing information from a plurality of traffic channels is configured according to a Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH) standard into a composite signal transferred to and from a telecommunciations interface (140). A PDH traffic interface (112) receives PDH channel signals from a plurality of PDH channels and a bit-pipe interface (118) receives bit-pipe traffic transported as a packet data stream. A composite signal generation module and interface (124) then creates, outputs and receives a single composite serial data stream including, in a single composite format, informationfrom the received PDH channel signals as well as the packet data stream. The rate of the bit-pipe traffic may be adaptively modulated as a function of the composite rate.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a multiplexer for use in a multi-channel communication system supporting different formatting protocols. Background technique [0002] Continuing to use channel bandwidth more efficiently is a never-ending goal of telecommunication systems. From analog signals over copper wires to digital wireless and fiber optic networks, technology evolves, so does bandwidth, and thus the challenges and opportunities of the problem. [0003] One such challenge stems from the different transport protocols and standards in use. For example, some protocols, such as Ethernet, specify asynchronous transport, while others, such as the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) standards, rely on tight synchronization. Still other systems are designed according to the Plesiosynchronous (from the Greek plesio+chronos, meaning "close in time") Digital Hierarchy (PDH) standard, in which different parts of the ...
