Problems solved by technology

Not only will this require relatively greater force, but the diopter will not be changed much due to the limited space in the anterior chamber
[0013] The above and other existing attempts to provide intraocular lenses with variable accommodation are often complex systems
These complex systems are expensive and difficult to manufacture, and are often impractical to implant in the human eye
Therefore, currently accommodating lenses offer less accommodation (approximately 1 to 2.5 diopters "D")

Embodiment Construction

[0053] The basic principles of adjusting lenses are of course well known to those skilled in the art. This principle is described in US Patent 5,489,302 figure 1 and 2 (and the related content disclosed in column 4, lines 20 to 52), which disclosure is incorporated herein by reference.

[0054] In general, one aspect of the present invention is an implantable interface refractive intraocular lens (IRAL) assembly or device that responds to the physiological needs of the lens user (e.g., the patient to whom the lens has been implanted). Change to adjust its focal length. Lenses include flexible optical housing lenticular bodies, or optical and cooperating haptics. The optical chamber is generally defined by opposing, substantially parallel, optically transparent, generally circular disks that are flexibly joined at their edges and spaced apart to define an enclosed fluid chamber. The fluid chamber comprises first and second liquids, the liquids have different refractive indi...

Abstract

This invention relates to intraocular lenses. More particularly, this invention relates to intraocular lenses that have the ability to alter the light refractive power in response to changes in the tension of the ciliary muscle or ciliary body of the eye or any other accommodative forces. Lenses of this invention are generally referred to as interfacial, i.e., lens properties being defined as theinterface of two liquids having different refractive indices, refractive accommodating lenses (IRAL).

Description

[0001] Cross application of related applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Nos. 60 / 887,933 and 60 / 887,928, filed February 2, 2007, the entire disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference (including one or any references incorporated by reference in both articles). technical field [0003] The present invention relates to intraocular lenses. More specifically, the present invention relates to intraocular lenses having the ability to change the optical power of light rays in response to changes in the tension of the ciliary muscle or body of the eye, or any other adjustable force. A lens in the present invention generally refers to an accommodation lens. Background technique [0004] The natural lens of the human eye is a clear lens contained within a capsular bag located behind the iris and in front of the vitreous cavity in an area called the posterior chamber. The capsular bag is attached on each side to...
