Embodiment 1

[0045] Application of compound NPM and compound NPC as a single tanning agent.

[0046] Sheepskins soaked at pH 1.5 were degreased and adjusted to pH 3.5 and dispensed arbitrarily for tanning with the various tanning agents listed in Table 1 below. These hides were tanned one by one for 5 hours in a computer-controlled dosing drum at 12 revolutions per minute according to a standard method, gradually raising the pH of the tanning bath to pH 5.5 to 6.5 with sodium formate and sodium bicarbonate and maintaining the temperature at 35°C. The shrinkage temperature as a measure of tanning was measured according to method IUP 16 described by the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists. Oil and crust this leather lotion following standard procedures. The results are given in Table 1 below:

[0053] The soaked sheepskin was degreased and its pH was adjusted to 3.5. Following a standard procedure, the hides were tanned with THPS for 5 hours in a computer-controlled dosing drum at 12 rpm, gradually raising the pH of the tanning bath to 5.0 to 5.5 with sodium formate and sodium bicarbonate and maintaining it. The temperature is at 35°C. The shrinkage temperature, which is a measure of tanning, is measured according to method IUP 16 described by the International Union of Leather Technologists and Chemists. These skins are then randomly distributed for further tanning with various known mineral tanning agents. Tanning with the novel compound NPM, the known THPS in combination with NPM or THPS and different aluminum salts. The results are given in Table 2 below:

[0071] The soaked sheepskin was defatted and the pH was adjusted to 3.5. In a computer-controlled dosage drum at 12 revolutions per minute, hides were tanned with different concentrations of the compound NPM for 5 hours, and the pH of the tanning bath was gradually increased to pH 5.25 with sodium formate and sodium bicarbonate, and its temperature was maintained at 35°C. The shrinkage temperature was measured according to method IUP 16 as described by the International Association of Leather Technologists and Chemists. Then with 9.12% basic aluminum formate (1% Al 2 o 3 ) to further tan these skins and adjust the final pH of the tanning bath to pH 4.4-4.6. The shrinkage temperature of these skins was again measured as above. Oil and crust the leather lotion following standard procedures. The results are given in Table 3 below:

Abstract

A novel tannage comprises the reaction product of a quaternary phosphonium compound (e.g. tetrakis hydroxymcthyl phosphonium chloride or sulphate) with a vegetable tanning agent (e.g. mimosa, chestnut, wattle, tara, myrobolam or quebracho). There is also provided a method for the production of such a tannage.
