Abstract

A cell processing method and apparatus in an ATM switch can reduce or prevent cell loss and throughput deterioration of the switch caused by HOL blocking. The cell processing method can include storing unicast cells and multicast cells in a shared buffer memory and storing addresses of the respective cells in different address queues, assigning respective priorities to the cells stored in the shared buffer memory, reading out the cells from the shared buffer memory according to the assigned priorities, and sending the cells read out from the shared buffer memory to fan-out ports and determining the cell to be output when multiple cells reach a fan-out port. The processing apparatus can include a buffer that stores cells inputted to the ATM switch, multicast connection identifier (MCI) address queues that store buffer addresses of multicast cells and unicast address queues for storing buffer addresses of unicast cells. A fan-out port is used for receiving the cell from each address queue and outputing the cell to the corresponding destination.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to cell processing in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch, in particular to a cell processing method and device in an ATM switch using a multicast connection identifier (MCI). Background technique [0002] Multicast is two-way communication between multiple locations, meaning a type of communication between one sender and multiple destinations. For example, multicasting is the same as sending e-mail to all addresses stored in an address book. Multicast is a type of communication used for teleconferences such as video conferencing or teleconferencing, in which one sender sends a video or audio signal to several selected destinations (i.e., locations). Multicast can also be used in For sending video data from a video on demand (VOD) server to a plurality of user set-top boxes. [0003] Unicast, as opposed to multicast, means a type of communication between a sender and a destination. [0004] As conventional mul...
