Described herein are methods for the rapid detection of the presence or absence of Epstein Barr virus (EBV) in a biological or non-biological sample. The method may include performing an amplification step, a hybridization step, and a detection step. In addition, EBV-targeting primers and probes as well as kits designed to detect a target region of EBV are provided. Kits, reaction mixtures, and oligonucleotides (e.g., primers and probes) for amplifying and detecting EBV are also described.
