Embodiment 1

[0021] 30,000 lbs of a mixture of isomers of HCFC-241, isomers of HCFC-242, isomers of HCFC-243 and cis isomers of HCFO-1233zd are fed to the production of HFC-245fa from HCC-240fa commercial reactor. The reaction was run at a temperature of 215°F and a pressure of 150 psig. The reaction product is continuously withdrawn. HFC-245fa meeting all product specifications was produced from the mixture.

Embodiment 2

[0023] In a laboratory setup, a small amount of a mixture of HCFC-241 isomers, HCFC-242 isomers, HCFC-243 isomers and HCFO-1233zd cis isomers was mixed with HF and fluorinated Antimony pentachloride catalyst mix. SbCl was charged first by stirring at room temperature with about 180 RPM 5 and HF to react. The HCl produced by the fluorination of the catalyst is drained into a wash bottle containing KOH solution. The reactor was then heated to 95°C, while the organics feed cylinder was also heated to about 95°C. When this temperature is reached, quickly charge with organics.

[0024] For each experiment it was observed that the temperature first dropped by about 10°C-12°C and then heated to 112°C-118°C. After this, the reaction cooled back to about 95°C within a few minutes. The pressure was raised to 700-800 psig for each reaction. After all the reactions had run for about 1-2 minutes, the pressure stopped rising. The reaction was maintained at final temperature for an ad...

Abstract

A process is described wherein otherwise unusable by-products from a process for the manufacture of trans HCFO-1233zd(E) are converted to a valuable product by introducing them into a process for theproduction of HFC-245fa. The process includes the catalytic hydrofluorination of a reaction mixture comprising the HCFO-1233zd production by-products.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims domestic priority to commonly owned co-pending US Provisional Application Serial No. 62 / 160,026, filed May 12, 2015, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] US Patent No. 9,045,386 describes a process for the production of high purity trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (HCFO-1233zd(E)) on a commercial scale. This patent is hereby incorporated by reference. [0004] It has been found that certain by-products can be produced during the production process of HCFO-1233zd(E), including HCFC-241 isomers, HCFC-242 isomers, HCFC-243 isomers, HCFC-244 isomers and the cis isomer of HCFO-1233zd. These by-products were produced at a ratio of 0.25-35 kg / kg of the trans isomer of HCFO-1233zd. Since these by-products are not simple HCFO-1233zd precursors, they cannot be easily recycled in the process. The amount of these by-products and the cost of their ...
