But experience has shown that with common high-gain electrospray ion sources, when the accumulation time is greater than 40 ms, there is some loss of ions in the tubular channel (11), resulting in a duty cycle of only 40%

Embodiment Construction

[0039] The present invention relates to a trapped ion mobility spectrometer as described in document US 7,838,826 B1 (M.A. Park, 2008) and provides apparatus and methods for increasing the availability of ions generated in an ion source. In trapped ion mobility spectrometers, the ions are typically driven against the DC electric field barrier by a gas flow, and the ions are stopped there because they cannot cross the DC electric field barrier. The original instrument was constructed with an electric field that increased linearly in front of the potential barrier, corresponding to a quadratic increase in the potential. At equilibrium, ions with high mobility (smaller cross-section) are concentrated near the bottom of the barrier, and ions with low mobility (larger cross-section) are concentrated near the apex.

[0040] The present invention is based on the recognition that high mass ions (low mobility) are lost upon accumulation over long periods of time, since high mass ions u...

Abstract

The invention provides a trapping ion mobility analyzer and methods for operating the ion mobility analyzer. The trapping ion mobility analyzer comprises an RF field for radially confining ions along an axis, a region with an axial electric DC field and a gas flow along the axis counteracting the electric DC field in the region, wherein the region either comprises a rising edge with an increasing axial electric DC field or a falling edge with a decreasing axial electric DC field and wherein the slope of the electric field strength along the axis is not constant at a substantial portion of the edge.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to apparatus and methods for acquiring mass spectra of ions separated by their mobility. Background technique [0002] A mass spectrometer can only determine the ratio of ion mass m to ion charge z. For convenience, the terms "mass of an ion" or "mass of an ion" as used hereinafter both refer to the mass m of the ion divided by the dimensionless number z of the elementary charge. "Ionic species" shall mean ions having the same elemental composition, the same charge, and the same three-dimensional structure. Ionic species generally include all ions of an isotopic group, which consists of ions with slightly different masses but nearly the same mobility. "Isomers" refer to molecules that have the same elemental composition but differ in the spatial arrangement of the elements or groups of elements within the molecule. [0003] Especially for bioorganic molecules, knowledge about different kinds of isomers is increasingly i...
