Embodiment

[0062] Example #1 ( Processing of woven fabrics)

[0063] 8.2oz / yd 2 3xl left-hand twill fabric 100% cotton fabric (having a greige structure of 108 ends / inch×56 picks / inch) desizing, washing, bleaching and mercerizing. A solution containing 3% solids at 80°F was prepared by adding 6% dye binding composition (a combination of 45% solid polyurethane aqueous solution and 5% solid cellulose acetate to give 50% total solids content) and water. Using a pressure set at 40 psi, hard rubber rollers and steel rollers are used to pad the fabric through a mangle. The moisture absorption of the fabric is 88%, resulting in 2.6% of solids added to the fabric. The fabric was processed through an 8-zone gas fired tenter at 380°F using each zone setting at 40 yards / minute. The fabric is completely dried and cured (at the exit of the tenter).

Abstract

Products and methods for ring dyeing a yarn and / or surface dyeing a fabric are provided. The product and method discloses the application of a dye binding composition including a urethane based polymer to a textile yarn, fabric, or garment. The dye binding composition is engineered so that the composition is positioned on or near the surface of the yarn, producing a ring dyed material. The dye binding composition can be colored with selective dyes that bind to the composition but generally do not have affinity for textile substrate. Garments created using this fabric can be abraded to remove surface polymer and color in different locations of the garment, creating an antiqued appearing garment. Dyes of different classifications can be used to produce novel performance and coloration effects in textile materials and garments. This process has been demonstrated on yarn (for a denim-like appearance), knitted and woven fabrics, and garments.

Description

Background technique [0001] Over time, colors have been applied to textiles. Before the dye industry was formed, natural colorants obtained from plants and the earthen surroundings were used. Dye fixation, durability, light resistance, fastness, and depth of color are all challenges. As dye chemistry became known and synthetic methods for designing dyes to attach to specific fibers became abundant, dyes were created to attach to various fiber types under different mechanisms. For cellulosic materials, the vat dye and the reducing material are made soluble, and then once the dye has penetrated the fiber, it is fixed by oxidation. Also used are metalized mordants that can bind with water-soluble colorants when applied to natural fibers to precipitate the dye once in the fiber. In order to take advantage of the solubility of the dye components used for coloring textiles, naphthol dyes are applied, and when combined with a companion base, lead to trapping of insoluble colorants i...
