However, the electric motor can be located anywhere within the vehicle. The electric motor is of the type having a set of coils as part of a stator attached to the vehicle, and the stator is radially surrounded by a rotor carrying a set of magnets attached to the wheel. For the avoidance of doubt, aspects of the invention are equally applicable to generators having the same arrangement. Thus, the definition of electric motor is intended to include generators. Additionally, some aspects of the invention are applicable to arrangements having a rotor mounted centrally within radially surrounding coils. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the present invention is applicable to other types of electric motors.

Abstract

A stator having two coil sets arranged to produce a magnetic field for generating a drive torque mounts two control modules and a capacitor assembly 920, mounted in a stator groove, formed by three film capacitors 1010, 1020, 1030 arranged to be coupled to a power source for providing current to the modules. C shaped busbars 900 connect to the power supply via tabs 960 and contact arms 1190,1191,1192 contact the first and second external capacitor electrodes 1110, 1120. Tabs 980 couple the busbars to the power inverters. The capacitors are separated by insulation 1130, 1160, metalized contact areas 1120 and 1150 respectively interconnect the first and third and third and second capacitors, the insulation extending to separate the metallised contact areas. Control modules 400 (Figs 2,6,7 not shown) mount on a fluid cooled heat sink surface 253 of a stator 252 and include power module 500, two power substrate 510 mounting, inverter operation control board 520 and a housing 550 with a first side for mounting to the heat sink surface, the housing including apertures 511 for allowing copper base plates of the power substrates 510 to be in contract with the heat sink.
