[0020] In engine systems operating with relatively lean combustion, such as in diesel engines, high NOx levels are generated. To control these NOx emissions, engine systems may include a selective catalyst reduction (SCR) device configured to convert NOx using injected reducing agents such as ammonia or urea. While SCR devices are effective at reducing NOx emissions, under some conditions, excess ammonia may be released from the device. To control this ammonia slip, for example, NOx levels out of the engine can be increased by reducing the amount of EGR. The excess NOx present in the exhaust can react with the excess ammonia at the SCR device, thereby reducing the amount of ammonia slip. The increase in engine NOx emissions may be controlled so that tailpipe NOx emissions downstream of the SCR device do not increase above a desired threshold.
