[0104] Preferred embodiments relate to a mass spectrometry method. A time-of-flight mass analyzer is preferably provided, preferably comprising a detector system incorporating an analog-to-digital converter rather than a conventional time-to-digital converter. The ions are preferably mass analyzed by a time-of-flight mass analyzer and the ions are preferably detected by an ion detector. The ion detector preferably comprises a microchannel plate (MCP) electron multiplier assembly. A current-to-voltage converter or amplifier is preferably provided which generates a voltage pulse or signal in response to an electrical pulse output from the microchannel plate ion detector. The voltage pulse or signal in response to a single ion arriving at the ion detector has a half-maximum width of 1 ns to 3 ns.
