A method on an information processing unit performing steps for creating a user interface (UI) to assemble a document that conforms to a particular document type definition. The method hides the specific syntax of document type definitions such as DTDs and schemas from the user. The method begins with a selection from a user for a document type or an existing document. Once the document type is selected or determined from the existing document the document type definitions are retrieved. The document type definitions include one or more elements. The method parses the elements which are subsequently mapped to one or more interface controls such as icons, pull-down menus, buttons, selection boxes, progress indicators, on-off checkmarks, scroll bars, windows, window edges for resizing the window, toggle buttons, forms, and UI widgets. UI can be GUIs or interactive voice response systems. A UI editor is presented by assembling the one or more interface controls without presenting specific document type definition syntax to a user. The UI editor permits the user to create and edit the content objects that are associated with the interface controls. The content objects are aggregated in an XML compatible format and ready to be checked in for further processing. The method permits specific UI interfaces to be created for specific publishing environments and at the same time permit the creation of reusable content objects.

A tactile touch-sensitive device for use as an electronic input device for navigating an electronic document on a display device is described. The tactile aspect of the device provides a document location indicator, such as a protrusion or a depression, which may be perceived through the sense of touch. The device may incorporate additional features such as multiple modes of navigation, namely isotonic and isometric scrolling. Various sensors, such as force sensors and capacitive sensors, may provide the user with coarse and fine scrolling capabilities through different types of interactions with the scrollbar. The force sensors may allow the user to alter the rate of scrolling by adjusting the magnitude of force applied. Additionally, capacitive sensors may detect absolute positions of a user's finger movement and navigate through a document pursuant to those movements.

A graphical user interface for browsing information displayed to a user. The information displayed includes zero or more elements and may be displayed in a display window. The display window has a perimeter and a scrollbar is positioned along the perimeter. The scrollbar may have a first end and a second end and a slider located between the ends. The slider may be configured such that movement of the slider causes information in the display area to be scrolled. In one embodiment, the size of the slider is based on the size of the one more elements of information displayed in the display window. A data-line may be positioned adjacent the scrollbar and may have a plurality of tick marks. A graphical element, which may be displayed in phantom, may be used to associate the slider to the data-line.

The content of a window, such as a dialog box, that has been authored for a particular size is repositioned and resized such that the window is viewable in its entirety when the display screen orientation is changed (e.g., from portrait to landscape.) A scroll bar is added to allow full access to content that is not visible within the display screen when necessary. Likewise, the scrollbar is removed when the scrollbar is no longer necessary in the new orientation. The repositioning and resizing of the window, as well as the addition or removal of the scrollbar occurs without interruption of other operating system applications.

Method and system for graphically indicating the activity of a plurality of users within a shared data collection

A display window is displayed in association with at least one scroll bar at a terminal associated with a first user. Along the shaft of one ore more scroll bars, a distinctive visual location cue, such as a line in a color associated with a second user, is displayed to indicate the relative location within the shared data collection of the current and historical activity of a second user. A user may temporarily prohibit manipulation of a region within the shared data collection by other users by establishing a "lock" on the region. A lock region may comprise several lines of text, a portion of a graphical object, or other data within the shared data collection. To indicate the location of lock regions, lock region location cues are also displayed along the scroll bar. In addition to indicating the location of lock regions, lock region location cues also indicate which user has established a lock region via a distinctive display attribute, preferably a distinctive color associated with the user who established the lock region. The location of a lock region is also indicated within the display area of a window by displaying the lock region with the same distinctive display attribute as the lock region location cue. In addition, when a cursor associated with a user prohibited from manipulating a lock region is located within the lock region, an aspect of the cursor, such as its shape, is altered. A preferred embodiment displays a representation of a key rather than a standard cursor to indicate to a user that his cursor is within a lock region.

A graphical user interface uses scroll bars having a single pixel width and a much larger scroll button or thumb. Both the scroll bar and the scroll button may be controlled to have selective degrees of transparency so that they underlying image information may be seen under certain conditions. In one application, the scroll bar itself is invisible until a cursor approaches to within a specified proximity. The graphical user interface permit scroll bars to be displayed which follow an arbitrary path in either two or three dimensions.
