[0088] All women attending routine antenatal care at King's College Hospital underwent color Doppler imaging of the uterine arteries (Acuson Aspen, California, USA) at 23-25 weeks of gestation. Doppler waveforms of the uterine artery were obtained as described above (Albaiges G et al. Obstet Gynecol 2000; 96:559-64). When three similar consecutive waveforms were obtained, an early diastolic notch was noted and the mean pulsatility index (PI) of both vessels was calculated. Forty-three pregnant women with serially identified abnormal uterine artery Doppler waveforms (double early diastolic notch) were recruited at the time of the Doppler study and compared with 43 pregnant women with normal uterine artery Doppler waveforms.
