Problems solved by technology

Coating on both sides of the paper requires multiple passes, making this method unsatisfactory because water must be removed from the back of the paper during hardening on the side that will eventually receive the photosensitive layer

example 1~5

[0083] Example 1 employs a 100% bleached hardwood chemical pulp furnish consisting approximately of 45% poplar, 30% maple and 20% birch using, on a dry fiber weight basis, the following chemicals: Alkyl ketene dimer (0.20%) , cationic starch (1.0%), polyaminoamide epichlorohydrin (0.25%), polyacrylamide resin (0.09%), diamino-stilbene fluorescent whitening agent (0.14%) and sodium bicarbonate (1% ). Example 1 corresponds to a standard stock base used for imaging purposes and was manufactured using a starch based surface size. Example 2 was the same base as described in Example 1 but was unsized and only minimally calendered. Example 3 took the base from Example 2 and performed a simple dip sizing using an aqueous dispersion of 80% water and 20 wt% hydrophobic polyester blended with carboxylated styrene butadiene resin. The blend of hydrophobic polyester with carboxylated styrene butadiene is manufactured by EvCote: model number PWRHS-37 is used. The same procedure was used ...

Abstract

The invention relates to an imaging member comprising at least one image layer and a base, said base comprising a cellulose paper that has its surfaces impregnated with water dispersible ester-based condensation polymer wherein the surface of said base has a roughness of less than 2.03 mum Ra and a hydrophobicity as measured by 40 / 20 Acid Valley test in excess of 500 seconds.

Description

field of invention [0001] This invention relates to imaging supports and media. In preferred forms, it relates to base materials for inkjet, thermal and photosensitive photographic papers. Background of the invention [0002] Imaging bases, especially photoimaging bases, need to be resistant to liquid penetration to prevent positive drying and positive transport problems during photofinishing, and later positive quality problems such as yellow fringing. The use of "sizing" to impart a degree of liquid repellency in paper is well known in the art. Size chemicals are generally added to the papermaking fibers prior to sheet formation (internal sizing) or to the surface of the sheet that has been, at least partially, dried (surface sizing). In the past, "sized" cellulose paper bases alone have not provided sufficient liquid repellency, thus limiting their usefulness or requiring additional processing steps. For example, fibrous base papers without a special waterproofing laye...
