[0017] Referring to Fig. 1, a protocol stack or communication mode of an industrial communication system is shown. This known system supports an application layer protocol, such as Modbus or DNP3.0, a data link layer protocol, such as UART (with 8 bits, a stop bit, and no parity), and a physical layer protocol, such as RS232 , RS485 or fiber optic communication. As shown in Figure 1, the general communication system in the remaining layers of the ISO seven-layer OSI model (presentation layer, dialog layer, transport layer, network layer) is not implemented or required in a typical industrial communication system.

[0018] What Fig. 2 shows is the communication mode of the communication system based on Profibus. This system supports the application layer protocol in the form of FMS or DP, the data link layer protocol FDL realized by a chip produced by Siemens, and a physical layer protocol RS485. Profibus system also supports LLI protocol (for presentation layer and dialogue ...

Abstract

A protective relay and power system protection method which incorporates multiple user-selectable communications protocols over multiple communications ports. The relay can support multiple communications protocols over a single communications port, and can support simultaneous formatting and communication over multiple communications ports using different protocols. By supporting a full array of communication protocols in each relay, protective control functionality is enhanced.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention generally relates to digital protection relays and protection controls for power distribution systems. More specifically, the present invention relates to digital protective relays with communication capabilities. [0002] Smart protective relays contain digital microprocessors that provide protective control for power distribution systems. Some digital protective relays have a communication function. However, these communication functions are usually relatively limited, and it may include, for example, an application layer protocol such as ModusRTU or ASCII communicating via RS485, RS232 or other fiber optic physical layer interfaces in the data link layer UART. Typical digital protection protocols with communication functions only support one application layer communication protocol, even if the relay includes multiple communication ports. [0003] U.S. Patent 5,680,324 discloses a communications processor for an el...
