Embodiment

[0020] Embodiments include providing 102 the first key of the electronic control unit to the sensor device. Additionally, the method comprises: encrypting 104 sensor data of the sensor device using the first key to determine the encrypted data; and sending the encrypted data from the sensor device to the electronic control unit 106 . Instead of sending the sensor data as plaintext data, the sensor data is encrypted before sending in order to prevent security attacks on the communication from the sensor device to the electronic control unit or on the system using the sensor data. The sensor data to be encrypted may be any data sent from the sensor to the ECU, for example data describing a physical quantity determined by the sensor. In some embodiments, other data sent from the sensor may also be encrypted, but it may not be critical to the security of the system if this data is compromised. An example of such data is configuration data of a sensor device. In other words, in s...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for communicating data from a sensor device to an electronic control unit, a sensor device and an electronic control unit. The method for communicating data from a sensor device to an Electronic Control Unit using a single-wire bi-directional communication protocol includes providing a first key of the Electronic Control Unit to the sensor device, encrypting sensor data of the sensor device using the first key to determine encrypted data, and transmitting the encrypted data from the sensor device to the Electronic Control Unit.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments relate to a method for transferring data from a sensor device to, for example, an electronic control unit in a vehicle. Background technique [0002] For various applications, unauthorized intrusion into communication networks with the purpose of disrupting systems is an increasing threat. Even vehicles can be the target of those attacks, allowing "hackers" to affect the behavior of the vehicle in ways not intended by the driver or the automaker. For example, loose control of a vehicle and unsafe driving behavior could be a successful attack if an entire communications network is disabled, or if individual components of a system are deliberately manipulated in a manner that could pose a threat to the driver and the vehicle's environment result. For example, a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus may be used to interconnect various Electronic Control Units (ECUs) within a vehicle, with each ECU coordinating one or more of the vehicle's funct...
