Embodiment Construction

[0013] The following description refers to solutions for engine systems such as figure 1 A system and method for fouling spark plugs in an engine system without overheating the spark plugs. An engine controller may be configured to execute a control routine such as figure 2 procedure) to burn off the soot accumulated on the spark plug without inducing knocking. Therein, the controller may alternate cylinder operation with spark advance and cylinder operation with nominal spark until spark plug fouling has been resolved. The degree of spark advance applied, and the duration of operation with nominal spark elapsed between successive cylinder events with spark advance may be based on improvement in an indication of spark plug fouling, such as determined based on the output of an ion sensor of) to adjust ( Figure 3-4 ). refer to Figure 5-7 Example spark timing adjustments are shown. In this way, spark plug fouling can be better addressed without causing knocking.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method and system for ignition control. Methods and systems are provided for addressing spark plug soot fouling. In one example, a method may include alternating one or more combustion events with spark timing advanced with one or more combustion events with nominal spark timing. The approach allows spark plug over-heating, and related issues such as knock, to be reduced.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods and systems for controlling a vehicle engine in response to spark plug fouling. Background technique [0002] An engine ignition system may include a spark plug for delivering electrical current to a combustion chamber of a spark-ignition engine to ignite the air-fuel mixture and initiate combustion. Depending on engine operating conditions, spark plug fouling can occur, wherein the firing tip of the spark plug insulator is coated with foreign matter such as fuel, oil, or soot. Once fouled, the spark plugs cannot provide enough voltage to trigger combustion in the cylinder until the plugs are sufficiently cleaned or replaced. For example, spark plugs can be cleaned by operating the engine at speed-load conditions that raise the temperature of the spark plug tip sufficiently to burn off soot that has accumulated on the fouled spark plug. [0003] In modern boosted engine systems with large dynamic ope...
