[0059] Fundamental processes of small molecule action in metabolite expression profiling

[0060] Subjects were evaluated by a qualified grader to determine the condition of their scalp. Dandruff subjects were evaluated by a qualified grader to determine their level of visible flakes. Baseline assessments were performed on healthy scalp subjects without dandruff to determine the normalized levels of each biomarker. In this study, 60 dandruff-free subjects were evaluated at baseline. 119 dandruff patients were treated with an anti-dandruff shampoo containing 1% ZPT and 115 dandruff patients were treated with an anti-dandruff shampoo containing 1% selenium sulfide. They were evaluated at baseline and again after three weeks of using the product. Subjects washed their regular, conditioner-free, non-dandruff shampoo for two weeks prior to treatment with the anti-dandruff shampoo. Subjects with dandruff were treated with anti-dandruff shampoo (shampoo composition containing 1...

Abstract

A noninvasive method for diagnosing skin health in a subject comprising collecting a skin sample from the subject; detecting a level of one or more small molecule biomarkers in the epithelial cell sample / skin cell sample; diagnosing the subject as having a skin condition based on the level of a detected small molecule biomarker, wherein the detected small molecule is at least one compound chosen from: a compound generated by metabolism of amino acids, a compound generated by dipeptides metabolism, a compound generated by nucleic acids, a compound generated by metabolism of lipids, a compound generated by metabolism of carbohydrates, and mixtures thereof and further small molecule biomarkers as listed in Table 1. Further, a noninvasive method for evaluating the efficacy of products for skin health.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods for measuring the amount of one or more small molecule and / or metabolite biomarkers from a skin sample and the correlation and correlation of the amounts of these biomarkers as it is directly related to the improvement of mammalian skin health Associated. Background technique [0002] The scalp / skin is a remarkable organ system consisting of multiple specialized tissues that function as a first line of defense against environmental aggressors. While early research focused on the barrier function of the skin, it has become clear that this organ is dynamic: sensing and responding to even small changes in the environment to help maintain homeostasis. Environmental influences such as solar radiation, pollution, or even the application of skin care products lead to complex cascades of events that ultimately lead to changes in the expression of hundreds or thousands of genes. These changes in gene expression are gen...
