Transition metal-amines are used to introduce ionic species of transition metals such as copper into the channels and / or cavities of zeolites during crystallization. Non-framework transition metals introduced into zeolites during their synthesis are referred to herein as in situ metals. In certain embodiments, silica, alumina, templating agent, and seeds are mixed to form a reaction mixture, such as a colloid, which is then heated to promote crystallization. Metal-containing zeolite crystals precipitate out of the reaction mixture. These crystals were collected, washed and dried.
