[0014] The present disclosure relates to the transmission and storage of diagnostic tests with the goal of enabling scalability of the test types and the diagnostic measurements involved.

[0015] One challenge in creating a multipurpose diagnostic application is the ability to add and support new diagnostic test types and measurements over time. Examples of diagnostic test types that may be supported include: vital signs, resting ECG, spirometry, exercise ECG, Holter, and the like. A major concern in adding new test types and measurement results to an existing system is how to handle the transfer and storage of these new types while minimizing changes to existing code and database structures.

Abstract

A method for extending a functionality of a computing device programmed to obtain physiological measurements from a patient includes: registering, at the computing device, a plug-in module, the plug-in module providing additional functionality for the computing device; using the plug-in module to communicate with a medical device; commanding the medical device to obtain physiological information from a patient; receiving data associated with the physiological information from the medical device; and transferring the data to a central repository.
