Problems solved by technology

[0005] The SIG approach has some disadvantages such as excessive driveline disturbances due to engine start transients being transmitted to the wheels as the transmission is fully engaged in gear
Additionally, SIG technology results in engine cranking loads as the transmission is fully engaged with its torque converter unlocked providing a torque flow path to the wheels
In addition, the SIG approach requires excessive electrical power consumption because, for an electrohydraulically operated automatic transmission, the electric assist pump must be fully activated before and during engine start and stop to maintain sufficient hydraulic line pressure to keep the transmission fully engaged in gear
This results in excessive energy consumption when the engine is switched off
[0006] This strategy cannot be applied in dual clutch powershift automatic transmission applications without a torque converter
Finally, vehicle systems and engine controls have little or no transmission control coordination when using the SIG

Embodiment Construction

[0021] Referring now to the accompanying drawings, figure 1 The micro HEV powertrain 10 includes a power source 12 (such as an internal combustion engine), an engine starter 14, an automatic transmission 16 connected to the engine through an input shaft 18, an electric auxiliary hydraulic pump (EAUX) 28 (whose output is provided to the hydraulic system of the transmission pressure), battery 30 for supplying electrical energy to pump 28 and starter 14, drive shaft 24, final drive mechanism 26, and half shafts 32, 33 drivably connected to drive wheels 34, 35.

[0022] Transmission 16 may be a hydraulically actuated automatic transmission having a torque converter 24 which may include an impeller 27 connected to the engine and a turbine 25 hydrodynamically driven by the impeller, and a bypass clutch 22 (which selectively drivably connects the turbine to connected to the impeller). Alternatively, the transmission may be a powershift automatic transmission in which dual clutches c...

Abstract

A method for restarting an engine in a hybrid electric powertrain includes using an auxiliary pump while the engine is shutdown to maintain stroke pressure in an oncoming transmission friction control element whose engagement is required to launch the vehicle following the restart, initiating an automatic engine restart, increasing a torque capacity of the control element while the engine is restarting, and using pressure produced by a transmission pump in the transmission to lock the control element after the engine restarts.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the powertrain of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and more particularly to its control during engine restart times. Background technique [0002] A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a vehicle configured with a hybrid drive system that utilizes at least two different sources of torque to propel the vehicle. As a non-limiting example, a hybrid drive system may combine a conventional drive system including a multi-speed automatic transmission and an internal combustion engine with one or more electric motors and a rechargeable energy storage device (such as a battery) capable of driving the electric motors or storing energy Combined with an advanced electric drive system, it improves fuel economy over conventional vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles typically offer different powertrain operating modes with the engine on or off depending on vehicle operating conditions, battery condition, and driver drive requirem...
