[0019] H.264 / AVC is the first video coding standard to use spatial direction prediction for intra coding. Compared to previous standards where intra prediction is done in the transform domain, this improves the predicted signal quality, which in turn increases coding efficiency. In H.264 / AVC, spatial intra prediction is formed by using surrounding available samples, which are previously reconstructed samples within the same slice that are available at the decoder. For luma samples, frames can be formed based on 4x4 blocks (denoted Intra_4x4), based on 8x8 blocks (denoted Intra_8x8) and for 16x16 macroblocks (denoted Intra_16x16) Intra-forecast.
