Embodiment

[0101]The invention will now be described with reference to the following examples. This example is provided for illustrative purposes only, and the invention is not limited to this example, but includes all variations that are apparent as a result of the teaching provided herein.

[0102] Selective Crystallization of Nabumetone

[0103] The experiments in this example were performed to demonstrate that the energetically labile polymorph of nabumetone (4-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)-2-butanone) can be passed through solid nabumetone of non-resonant laser radiation to reform.

[0104] The solid crystalline form of nabumetone is irradiated with off-resonant laser radiation while the sample is thermally driven through the phase transition temperature. Subsequent Raman scattering analysis of nabumetone demonstrated the presence of a second crystalline form of nabumetone in the laser-irradiated sample. The Raman spectra of the two polymorphic forms of nabumetone are shown in Figures 2...

Abstract

The invention relates to methods of assessing the polymorphic form of a substance by assessing Raman-shifted radiation scattered by a particle of the substance. The method is useful, for example, for assessing particle sizes and size distributions in mixtures containing both particles of the substance and other materials. The invention also relates to methods of selecting and controlling polymorph formation by illuminating a material with non-resonant (i.e., non-absorbed) laser radiation as it is thermally driven through a phase transition temperature.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention generally relates to the field of compositional analysis of solid particles. [0002] Many compounds can exist in multiple discrete crystalline forms. For example, graphite and diamond are dispersed crystalline forms of elemental carbon. The property of being able to assume polymorphic forms is often referred to as polymorphism, and different crystal forms of the same compound are termed polymorphs, or more simply, polymorphisms. Polymorphs of a single compound generally have chemical properties that differ at least slightly. For example, polymorphs can exhibit differences in melting point, electrical conductivity, radiation absorption pattern, X-ray diffraction pattern, crystal shape, dissolution rate, and solubility, even when polymorphs are composed of the same chemical species. [0003] In the context of pharmaceutically active compounds, differences between polymorphs can affect the pharmacological properties of ...
