Embodiment Construction

[0019] The present invention is a user selectable water temperature regulation system consisting of two independent channels with equal heating and cooling performance. Each channel of the system can operate in two modes called Standby mode and Maintain mode. A Prime mode (where the heaters are turned off) may also be provided where heat exchange fluid is circulated through all flow channels of the system at a high flow rate in order to fill the channels with heat exchange fluid and remove any entrained air.

[0020] In standby mode, the user is able to adjust the setpoint temperature, but there is no active adjustment of the temperature. The pump and heater are off for that particular channel. System electronics including display and processor provide low power draw.

[0021] In the maintenance mode, the user is able to adjust the setpoint temperature and produce an effective adjustment of the temperature. Depending on whether heating or cooling is required at any given ti...

Abstract

A dual channel fluid temperature control device that controls the temperature of cardiac fluid during surgery by using power from a convenient electrical outlet with a power limit. The first pump receives the first heat exchange fluid for selectively pumping the first heat exchange fluid within the first circulation channel. The second pump receives the second heat exchange fluid for selectively pumping the second heat exchange fluid within the second circulation channel. The first heater unit includes a first plurality of independently activatable heating elements, each of which has its own power consumption. The second heater unit includes a second plurality of independently activatable heating elements, each of which has its own power consumption. The controller selectively activates the first and second pumps and the first and second plurality of heating elements to selectively heat or cool the first and second heat exchange fluids such that power to all activated pumps and heating elements is drawn Stay within power limits.

Description

[0001] References to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application 60 / 599,628 filed August 6,2004. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates generally to cardiac surgery, and more particularly to the heating and cooling of blood or other fluids delivered to a patient during cardiac bypass surgery. [0004] Heating and cooling devices are an important part of blood perfusion systems used during cardiac surgery. During surgery, the blood is cooled in a shunt line to induce hypothermia that protects the organs. Typically, a separate cardioplegia line provides, at least periodically, a dedicated flow of cooling solution directly to the heart. When the procedure is complete, the blood and / or other fluids flowing in the two lines are warmed until the patient wakes up from anesthesia. In the different circumstances that can arise during the operation of a blood perfusion system, it is desirable not only to heat both...
