Embodiment Construction
[0008] According to the invention, the sheath around the flux core has a carbon content of less than 0.05%, so that there is substantially a lower percentage of carbon in the resulting weld metal. Nickel in the weld metal is controlled in the usual range of 1.0-2.0%. The weld metal does not contain a wide range of nickel like some general purpose electrodes. The nickel comes entirely from the alloying agent in the electrode core. The electrode cores had the compositions shown in Table I.
[0009] composition
[0010] Preparation of the electrode results in a weld metal having a tensile strength greater than 100Kpsi and a yield strength greater than 80Kpsi. Furthermore, there is substantially less diffusible hydrogen in the resulting weld metal than that obtained with H8 grade electrodes. These advantages cannot be obtained by the prior art related to the present invention.
