Problems solved by technology

For example, it would be easy to place a soft, loose band through the trocar without damaging the tissue, but it would be more difficult to orient it around the stomach
Whereas a stiffer, precurved band is easier to place around the stomach, but is more difficult to place through a trocar and is more prone to tissue damage

[0034] now refer to figure 1 , figure 1 A surgically implantable device 1 according to the invention is shown. Device 1 is similar to devices described in the following U.S. Patents: 4,592,339 to Kuzmak; RE 36176 to Kuzmak; 5,226,429 to Kuzmak; 6,102,922 to Jacobson and 5,601,604 to Vincent, all of which are incorporated herein by reference . The device comprises an elongated flexible inflatable bladder portion 10 . The bladder portion 10 is substantially emptied of fluid prior to implanting the device in a patient. Bladder portion 10 can be made from a variety of materials known to those skilled in the art, including silicone and polyurethane. In addition, these tapes can be coated with materials to improve diffusion resistance. These coatings include titanium powder and are described in PCT patent application WO2004 / 010910A1, which is hereby incorporated by reference.

Abstract

A surgically implantable fluid adjustable device, such as an adjustable gastric band, having an elongated substantially flexible inflatable portion, and an elongated flexible and substantially inextensible band portion attached to the inflatable portion. The device further includes a member for changing the shape of the device from a straight configuration to a curved configuration after being implanted within a body.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention applies to conventional endoscopic and open surgical instruments, as well as to robot-assisted surgery. The invention even further relates to surgically implantable adjustable bands, such as gastric bands for treating obesity. Background technique [0002] The percentage of the world's population suffering from morbid obesity is steadily increasing. Severely obese people tend to increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lung disease and accidental injury. Because of the impact morbid obesity has on a patient's life, research is under way to treat morbid obesity. [0003] Numerous non-surgical treatments for morbid obesity have been attempted, but with virtually no long-term efficacy. Dietary instruction, behavior modification, closure of the patient's jaw with a wire, and pharmacological approaches have all been tried and failed to correct the disease. Mechanical devices inserted into the body through non-surgical methods,...
