Problems solved by technology

[0008] There are at least two problems with the current scanner characterization solutions described: (1) the user must select a specific print medium and specific ink (here broadly including liquid or solid ink or toner) The correct profile for processing, (2) Even if the correct profile is selected, even within a given print media class there may be sufficient variance in the input material to cause detrimental errors in the scanner color correction system
Objects must be interpreted by an expensive spectrophotometer

Embodiment Construction

[0025] Embodiments will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, which represent the main concept of the full width array scanning spectrophotometer system 10 . As will be described further below, the document 12 to be scanned is illuminated with an illumination strip 12A by dual-sided LED irradiators 14,16. The central region of illuminated band 12A may be imaged vertically onto a 3 or 4 row full width array (FWA) image sensor 20 using SELFOC lens 18 . The entire spectrophotometer imaging module 10 consisting of illuminators 14, 16, lens 18 and FWA image sensor 20 may be stationary with documents moving over it at a constant speed transport, as in the normal paper output path of a conventional color printer as in figure 1 as shown in (see other examples in the references cited above), or otherwise. Alternatively, the document is stationary and the image module moves at a constant speed, as in many imprint document scanners.

Abstract

A full-width array spectrophotometer for full-width scanning color analysis of a color inspection object having a plurality of different colors of a multiple repeating pattern of at least three or four different colors laterally covering a path of printing paper and illuminated in succession One or two generally linear elongated illumination arrays of closely spaced multiple LED illumination sources emitting to sequentially illuminate transverse illumination bands on printed paper moving along said paper path; also comprising corresponding elongated low cost A photoimaging strip comprising a parallel and corresponding plurality of closely spaced elongated arrays of differently color-sensitive (three or four rows of color-filtered) photodetectors arranged to detect and analyze light from Light reflected by laterally successively illuminated strips.
