Problems solved by technology

Although some improvement in quality is achieved by adding comfort noise, it does not significantly improve the overall quality since comfort noise does not simulate the actual background noise in the encoder

Embodiment Construction

[0051] According to the present invention, sounds such as speech and / or background noise are sampled and digitized using well known techniques. For example, an analog signal can be converted to digital format using a standard 8-bit / μ-law format, followed by a μ-law / standard code conversion. Alternatively, the analog signal can be converted directly to digital form in standard Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) format. Thus, in the preferred embodiment, each sample is represented by a 16-bit data word. The samples are organized into frames of input data, each frame consisting of a predetermined number of samples. In the presently disclosed embodiment, a sampling frequency of 8 KHz is considered. For 8KHz sampling frequency, each frame consists of 160 samples or 20msec of speech. It should be understood that other sampling frequencies and frame sizes may also be used.

[0052] The field of speech coding includes many different speech coding techniques, one of which is the CELP codi...

Abstract

An apparatus for masking frame errors comprising memory means for storing at least one previous frame of data and for providing said at least one previous frame of data in response to a frame error signal; and masking means for receiving said frame error signal and for generating a masking signal in accordance with at least one previous frame of data and a predetermined error masking format.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an invention patent application with the application date of June 11, 1992, application number 92104618.9, and the same invention title as this application. (1) Technical field [0002] The present invention relates to speech processing. In particular, the present invention relates to a novel and improved method and system for compressing speech in which the amount of compression is varied dynamically with minimal impact on the quality of the reproduced speech. In addition, since the compressed voice data is transmitted through a channel that may introduce errors, the method and system of the present invention also minimize the impact of channel transmission errors on the sound. (2) Background technology [0003] The use of digital technology to transmit voice has been widely used, especially in long-distance and digital radiotelephone equipment. This in turn has led to an interest in determining the minimum amount of i...
