Collagen precursor molecules are synthesized in the fibroblasts of the dermis; fibroblasts are the only collagen-producing cells in the dermis. Fibroblasts nourish the epidermis, and under normal conditions, they secrete large amounts of growth factors (such as FGF, IGF, and KGH among them) and produce procollagen. Procollagen enters the skin matrix and becomes structural collagen. Procollagen is a soluble collagen precursor secreted by fibroblasts, which is then converted extracellularly to insoluble collagen, the major extracellular structural component of human skin.
