Abstract

An absorbent tampon for feminine hygiene includes a radially compressed, elongate tampon pledget and a fluid transport element. The elongate tampon pledget includes a domed insertion end and a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves. At least a portion of the longitudinally extending grooves extend into the domed insertion end thereof. The fluid transport element includes an apertured polymeric film sheet disposed over the insertion end and attached to the elongate tampon pledget and a plurality of distal pleats to provide elements capable of extending away from the longitudinal surfaces of the elongate tampon pledget and a headspace between the domed insertion end and the apertured polymeric film sheet.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an elongated absorbent tampon for feminine hygiene, more particularly to a tampon having a fluid transport element, and a method for forming the same. Background technique [0002] Devices for trapping and storing bodily fluids intravaginally are commercially available and known in the literature. Intravaginal tampons used for feminine hygiene are the most common example of such devices. Commercially available tampons are generally compressed cylindrical masses of absorbent fibers that can be contained by an absorbent or non-absorbent cover. [0003] A tampon is inserted into a person's vagina and remains there for a period of time in order to collect and store vaginal fluids, most commonly menstrual blood. As vaginal fluid contacts the tampon, it should be absorbed and retained by the absorbent material of the tampon. After a period of time, the tampon and its retained fluid are removed and disposed of, and if neces...
