[0057] Some strategies for ex vivo perfusion focus on different modes of work that enable graft assessment during perfusion. According to the first strategy, a two-chamber mode of operation can be employed, in which only the left atrium is supplied with blood and blood is ejected from the left ventricle to perfuse the coronary arteries. According to another strategy, a four-chamber working heart platform can be employed that uses a pump to load the left atrium and a reservoir to load the right atrium by gravity. However, the decoupled design of the load system may make it difficult to manipulate the left and right preloads independently. Additionally, such systems may rely on the use of reservoir height to control right atrial pressure, which limits the system's ability to facilitate precise control of atrial load throughout the perfusion period.

Abstract

Systems and methods for performing perfusion and contractility assessments for a heart are provided. The system can operate in any of Langendorff mode, pump-supported working mode, passive working mode, and right-sided working mode. The system includes a reservoir from which one or more pumps are operable to supply a heart with fluids and collect fluids output therefrom. One or more clamps can beused to switch between Langendorff, pump-supported, passive, and right-sided working modes.
