Embodiment Construction
[0043] This document discusses an embodiment of a nitrogen removal system that operates to convert nitrate (e.g., soluble) in a water stream to nitrite and then, for example, to nitrous oxide (N x o x ), and then converted to nitrogen (N 2 ) to reduce the nitrate concentration in the water stream. In some aspects, the water flow originates from an animal habitat or other recirculating aquatic animal husbandry system that supports marine fish and other animals with a manufactured volume of salt water (or a volume of fresh water). For example, the denitrification system described in this disclosure utilizes a recirculation loop to increase the hydraulic retention time of the water stream within the denitrification system, thereby increasing the efficiency of the denitrification process. In some aspects, the nitrogen removal process is an autotrophic sulfur removal process that also includes pH balancing of the water to increase the efficiency of the nitrogen removal process. ...
