Embodiment 1

[0041] Sheets of polyethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF) with a Mw of 71,300 were thermoformed into cups suitable as coffee cups. The sheets were held at different temperatures for different periods of time to increase crystallinity, as shown in Table 1 below.

[0042] The resulting sheet was thermoformed in a mold by plug assisted vacuum thermoforming into cups with a height of 40 mm. The applied pressure was 5 bar. The thermoforming temperature was 180°C and the mold temperature was 45°C.

[0043] The resulting cups were subjected to a shrinkage test. In this test, boiling water is poured into a mug, the mug is held in that condition for 15 seconds, and then cold water is used to cool the mug. The height of the cup was measured before and after exposure to boiling water and compared to obtain percent shrinkage. The condition and properties of the sheets, the crystallinity of the cups and the results of the shrinkage tests are shown in Table 1 below.

Embodiment 2

[0049] A series of shrinkage tests were performed using: reference PEF sheet 21, Mw 71,300; PEF sheet 22, polymerized with pentaerythritol as branching agent and comonomer, and the amount of pentaerythritol was 0.05 wt% based on other monomers; And PEF sheet 23, extruded with the same branching agent, based on other monomers, the amount of branching agent was 0.1 wt%. The sheets were not subjected to the crystallization step, so the crystallinity of the sheets was very low, as shown in Table 2.

[0050] These sheets were thermoformed at a mold temperature of 45°C at a temperature of 170°C and a pressure below 5 bar to obtain cups with a height of 40 mm.

[0051] These cups were subjected to the same shrinkage test as the cups of Example 1. Some sheet properties, crystallinity of the cups and shrinkage results are shown in Table 2 below.

Abstract

Thermoformed article comprising poly(ethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate) polyester, which polyester has a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of at least 50,000, determined by gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as standard and which polyester is semicrystalline, is prepared in a process comprising: providing a sheet that comprises poly(ethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate) polyester, which polyester has a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of at least 50,000, determined by gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as standard and which polyester is semicrystalline; heating the sheet to a temperature above its glass transition temperature to obtain a pliable sheet; shaping the pliable sheet in a mold to a desired shape to obtain a pliable shaped article; cooling the pliable shaped article; and releasing the thus cooled shaped article from the mold.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to thermoformed articles comprising poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) polyester, and to sheets for thermoforming comprising poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) polyester material method. Background technique [0002] Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) polyesters (PEF) are long known polyesters. Such polyesters have been described in US2551731. However, it was not until the 21st century that the development of such polyesters sparked renewed interest. The polyester was found to have excellent properties. The suitability of PEF for making bottles, films and fibers is disclosed in WO2013 / 062408. According to the application, polyesters with a number average molecular weight of at least 25,000 (determined by GPC based on polystyrene standards) are well suited for the preparation of packaging materials due to their excellent barrier properties against oxygen, carbon dioxide and water. These barrier properties make...
