Problems solved by technology

Those skilled in the art will appreciate that some thermal management issues can be addressed by providing a separate heat sink that actively removes heat from the electrical components and / or circuit board, but such heat sinks also add to the cost of the device and complexity

Embodiment Construction

[0018] figure 1 One possible implementation of the lighting arrangement is shown, in this case involving the rear end of a sport utility vehicle 10 having a hitch hitch 12 connected to a trailer 13 (only a portion of which is shown) . In this embodiment, the lighting device 14 is carried by and partially concealed within the vehicle tonneau exterior panel 16 having an undercut or hanging area 18 for receiving a vehicle license plate 20 . figure 1 Also shown is the illumination path or area of the directional light 22 behind the vehicle 10 extending from the lighting device 14 towards an area around the hitch hitch 12 (eg, a predetermined target area). It should be understood that the lighting device 14 is not limited to figure 1 The exemplary embodiment is shown as this is only an example, and the lighting device could alternatively be implemented in many other vehicular and non-vehicular applications. Non-limiting examples of such applications include locations on the e...

Abstract

An illumination device (14), such as the type used for vehicle exterior applications, includes a housing (30) with light collimating and spreading portions (40, 42), a circuit card assembly (32) withone or more light sources (34) (e.g., LEDs), and a lens (36). The illumination device may be arranged so that light emitted by the LEDs reflects off of a metalized interior surface of the light collimating portion in a collimated fashion and travels towards the light spreading portion, the collimated light then reflects off of a metalized interior surface of the light spreading portion in a spreadfashion and travels towards the lens, and the spread light passes through the lens and travels towards an intended target region. The illumination device may be installed, for example, in a rear hatch (16) of a vehicle (10) and used in conjunction with a backup camera.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application Serial No. 62 / 295,917, filed February 16, 2016, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to a lighting device and, more particularly, to a lighting device that may be mounted on a vehicle, for example on the rear side of the vehicle proximate to a backup camera. Background technique [0004] Lighting devices, particularly those used on vehicles, often need to illuminate a predetermined target area with a lighting pattern that meets certain performance requirements, however, meeting these requirements with a cost-effective device can be challenging. [0005] For example, a vehicle exterior lighting device may need to illuminate the area behind the vehicle with a lighting pattern that requires both collimated and non-collimated light or diffuses the light at least at some point in its deliv...
