[0013] The ability to characterize the signal quality of the PPG waveform over time and evaluate the signal quality of smaller segments is very useful when the PPG signal is used to calculate other clinical parameters. According to one embodiment, a framework for evaluating PPG waveforms on a beat-by-beat basis is provided. First, a set of features is derived from the PPG waveform for evaluation on a beat-by-beat basis. Since the actual amplitude of the PPG signal is unknown, there is no need to use amplitude-based features. Instead, time- and / or shape-based features are derived from the PPG waveform. Second, the set of features is used to provide an indicator of each beat and overall waveform quality. Additionally, each feature can be assigned a different weight, which allows tailoring the PPG signal quality metric for different applications.
