The preparation method specifically comprises: (1) carrying out a thermal polymerization reaction on dicyclopentadiene and a modifier in an organic solvent to produce a petroleum resin, wherein the modifier is acrylimidazole or N-vinylimidazole; and (2) carrying out a hydrogenation reaction on the petroleum resin obtained in the step (1) under the action of a catalyst to obtain the modified dicyclopentadiene hydrogenated petroleum resin. According to the present invention, the preparation method is simple, and the obtained modified dicyclopentadiene hydrogenated petroleum resin has characteristics of high thermal stability, good compatibility with elastomers (such as SIS, SBSand the like) in hot melt adhesives, and relatively light color.
