Embodiment Construction

[0029] Fig. 1 (a) and (b) although represent known double-bridge control system, but it is utilized in the aspect and embodiment of the present invention, therefore, the label used for it is also used for discussing the connection of the present invention and its Aspects and Embodiments of Implementation. It is worth noting that the two motors 12, 12' may be physically located in one housing or exist separately, but in either case they both act on the same steering rack and in normal operation each contributes About 50% steering power. The motors 12, 12' may conveniently be brushless three-phase AC permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM) motors.

[0030] Figure 2(a) shows one half of the double bridge inverter 14 in more detail than Figure 1(a) (which shows two halves). The DC voltage is applied by the battery 10 between the supply rail and ground, and is connected to the three-phase motor 12 via an inverter 14 . The inverter 14 includes three parallel arms (A, B, C), each with...

Abstract

A method of controlling an electric power assisted steering (EPS) apparatus comprises a plurality of inverter bridges each connected to a multi-phase motor configured to provide power assist to steering of a vehicle. After detection of a failure within one of said inverter bridges, the current flow within the faulty inverter bridge is controlled, and one or more of the other inverter bridges is used to provide power assistance. A control system for an electric power assisted steering (EPS) apparatus comprises a plurality of inverter bridges (14, 14') each connected to a multi-phase motor (12,12') configured to provide power assist to steering of a vehicle, selection means for selectively operating switches (16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26) in an inverter bridge in which a failure has been detectedto control the current flow within the faulty inverter bridge, and control means for controlling one or more of the other inverter bridges to provide power assistance in accordance with the method.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to control in two (or more) lane electric power steering (EPS) systems, and particularly, but not exclusively, to managing faults in such EPS systems. Background technique [0002] Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems are well known in the art. The power generated by the electric motor is used to generate assist torque in the steering column in the same direction as the sensed demand torque generated by the driver of the vehicle turning the steering wheel. [0003] Figure 1(a) schematically represents the power flow in an EPS system with two inverter bridges. The battery 10 powers the double inverter bridge 14, 14' and the two motors 12, 12' acting on the same steering rack. Thus, each motor 12, 12' contributes approximately 50% to power steering. As illustrated in FIG. 1( b ), in the event of a failure of one of the inverter bridges 14 ′, the EPS system remains operational because the other inverter bridge 14 can stil...
