[0133] Magnetically actuated liquid crystals

[0134] The liquid-like behavior and optical anisotropy of liquid crystals catalyze many important applications in modern technologies. Their molecular order can be manipulated with the aid of external stimuli such as temperature changes and electric and magnetic fields, thus enabling many technological advances, a specific successful example being liquid crystal displays driven by electric fields. Although conventional liquid crystals may be sensitive to magnetic fields, the low magnetic susceptibility of the molecular species makes practical applications difficult because extremely strong magnetic fields are required to achieve efficient switching of molecular order (Kneppe et al. (1982) Chem. Phys. Lett. 87:59 ; Lemaire et al. (2004) Phys. Rev. Lett. 93:267801; van den Pol et al. (2009) Phys. Rev. Lett. 103:160952).

Abstract

In various embodiments magnetically actuated liquid crystals are provided as well as method of manufacturing such, methods of using the liquid crystals and devices incorporating the liquid crystals. In one non-limiting embodiment the liquid crystals comprise Fe3O4 nanorods where the nanorods are coated with a silica coating.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of and priority to USSN 61 / 976,364, filed April 7, 2014, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety for all purposes. [0003] statement of government support [0004] This work was supported by Grant No DNR00956081 from the National Science Foundation. The government has certain rights in this invention. Background technique [0005] The development of magnetically responsive liquid crystals (LCs) is of both fundamental and practical importance, as it not only represents an ideal system in condensed matter that allows the interrogation of phase complexity in simple samples as the external field changes, but also opens the door to A pathway toward a variety of applications benefiting from the immediate and contactless nature of magnetic interaction. [0006] Conventional liquid crystals (LC) are hardly sensitive to magnetic fields. Limited by the low magnetic suscept...
