[0026] Embodiments of the present invention provide a method of identifying the presence of heroin in an impure heroin composition comprising heroin and at least one fluorescent contaminant that interferes with the Raman signal from the heroin. The amount of heroin contained in the sample may range from as low as 2%, 10%, 30% or 50% to any of 60%, 70%, 80% or even 100%. These percentages, and any other percentages herein, unless expressly mentioned otherwise, are percentages by weight. "Heroin" as used herein refers to heroin in any form, whether hydrochloride or other salt, or free base (ie, absent or substantially absent in the salt form). Various types of fluorescent contaminants have been described above. The amount of such contaminants that can be used can range from any one of 1%, 5%, 10%, 30%, 50%, 95%, or more.
