Embodiment Construction

[0010] Buspirone may be in the form of a salt, hydrate or solvate. Salts include pharmaceutically acceptable salts, such as acid addition salts derived from inorganic or organic acids, such as hydrochloride, hydrobromide, p-toluenesulfonate, phosphate, sulfate, perchlorate, acetate, Tribromoacetate, propionate, citrate, malonate, succinate, lactate, oxalate, tartrate and benzoate.

[0011] Salts with bases are also possible. Such salts include those derived from inorganic or organic bases, such as alkali metal salts such as magnesium or calcium salts, and organic amine salts such as morpholine, piperidine, dimethylamine or diethylamine salts.

[0012] For the present invention, buspirone is preferably administered by intravenous, transdermal or rectal route. In addition, subcutaneous, inhalational, sublingual, buccal, and nasal routes may be employed, wherein (where appropriate) access of the parent drug to the stomach is limited.

Abstract

Buspirone is useful in the treatment of a condition which is nausea, vomiting, retching or any combination thereof, in a human patient, when administered by a route which avoids first-pass metabolism.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the treatment of nausea and vomiting. Background technique [0002] Emesis refers to the effect of vomiting and is described as the rapid expulsion of gastrointestinal contents from the oral cavity due to the forceful contraction of the abdominal wall muscles and the descent of the diaphragm. Vomiting usually, but not always, comes after nausea. Retching involves the same physiology as vomiting, but retching occurs with the glottis closed. Vomiting, nausea, retching, or a combination thereof ("the symptoms") can be caused by many factors, including but not limited to anesthetics, certain types of surgery, radiation, cancer chemotherapeutics, poisons, drugs such as serum Vitamin reuptake inhibitors, pain relievers such as morphine, antibiotics, pregnancy, and exercise. Disorders associated with vertigo, such as Meniere's disease, can also cause the symptoms. Headaches such as those caused by migraines, increased intr...
