[0028] [28] The anti-skimming security measure of the present invention can be applied to any holographic magnetic strip that has undergone ESD treatment in another set of embodiments. The holographic magnetic strip or tape greatly reduces or minimizes electrostatic discharge (ESD) of the metallic components in the holographic portion of the magnetic strip by dividing the aluminum layer into small segments. These segments can be produced by selectively removing aluminum to form a fixed pattern by means of an existing demetallization process. This demetallization pattern produces a repeating pattern of resist / aluminum segments (dots) that can modulate the magnetic signal amplitude into a repeating pattern of demetallization. According to one embodiment of the invention, this repetitive modulation of the readback signal amplitude can be used as a magnetic signature or fingerprint of the magnetic strip.
