[0089]In the first embodiment, the setting of the protection attribute is input by the user according to the schedule and numbers. In a second embodiment, the protection attribute setting will be received along with the reproduction process. More particularly, in the second embodiment, pressing the record key of the remote controller while the HD area is being reproduced will set the protection attribute to the broadcast program being reproduced. Also, pressing the memo key of the remote controller will set the attribute to the area from the current reproduction point to α hours later.

[0090] The second embodiment is characterized by the reproduction control unit 11 . In the second embodiment, reproduction control unit 11 obtains a time stamp defining the reproduction time of each VOBU every time a VOBU is read out from the HD area, and judges which broadcast program each VOBU belongs to. (The result of the judgment is referred to as "current program".) The time stamp is t...

[0105] In the first and second embodiments, the recording device is an HD recorder having only the HDD5; however, in the third embodiment, a recording device having the DVD drive 14 in addition to the HDD5 will be explained.

[0106] A recording apparatus having a DVD drive 14 is called a hybrid recorder, and includes an internal structure as shown in FIG. 19 . The recording device in Figure 19 is different from figure 2 The recording device is characterized in that it includes a DVD drive 14 and a duplication control unit 15 .

[0107] The DVD drive 14 is to load a DVD having a storage capacity of 4.7 Gbytes, and to perform reading and writing of the DVD. The DVD in this embodiment is a recordable DVD such as DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD+RW. HDD5's HD is built-in, while DVD is portable and can be replaced when necessary.

[0108] The copy control unit 15 copies one of the N hours of broadcast programs recorded on the HDD 5 to the DVD in the track buffer 4 .

Abstract

The continuous recording controlling unit (10) performs the continuous recording process and stores VOBUs broadcasted from N hours ago to the current time in the HDD (5). The recording apparatus receives a specification from the user as to which period of the recording between N hours ago and the current time should be retained. The protective attribute setting unit (13) sets a protective attribute to a part of the HDD (5) that corresponds to the period specified by the user. The continuous recording process is performed by overwriting one of the VOBUs recorded on the HDD (5) with a newly obtained VOBU, but the part of the HDD (5) to which the protective attribute is set is protected against overwriting.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a recording device that performs a broadcast recording process. Background technique [0002] Recently, various broadcasting services have been provided through terrestrial waves and satellite waves. Broadcast schedules are available to the public in magazines and newspapers and in the TV section of the EPG (Electronic Program Guide). In order for the user to watch the broadcast program he / she desires, the user must search for the broadcast program in the TV section of a magazine / newspaper or EPG, and complete the programming or operation of the recording device before the broadcast program starts. [0003] When the user does not have enough time to watch the TV portion of the magazine / newspaper or EPG, they will not be able to program or operate the recording device. Some users may be very disappointed to learn that they missed a broadcast program they liked to watch. Contents of the invention [0004] It is an...
