Benefits of technology

The new grapevine variety, IFG Twenty-three, has been created because of its unique combination of labrusca flavor, firm texture, and seedlessness. The berries are large and have a mild fruity labrusca flavor, which is similar to the Kyoho variety but smaller in size. The vine is also productive and can be pruned to short spurs. Distinct from other grape varieties, the berries may occasionally split at the stylar end and have a strong attachment to the pedicel. Overall, this new variety offers a unique combination of desirable traits, including resistance to disease and insects and aromatic flavors.

Problems solved by technology

Fruits are fairly low in acidity, with medium dense firm texture, having occasionally noticeable seed traces and may be difficult to color in hot climatic conditions.
Previously introduced interspecific varieties have had very limited commercial success due to small fruit size, large seed traces, slipskin texture or lack of firmness.

Embodiment Construction

[0008]Throughout this specification, color names beginning with a small letter signify that the name of that color, as used in common speech, is aptly descriptive. Color names beginning with a capital letter designate values based upon R.H.S. Colour Chart, published in 2001 by The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England.

[0009]Throughout this specification subjective description values conform to those set forth by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute publication ‘Descriptors for Grape’ (vitis spp.) (1983) which was developed in collaboration with the Office International de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV) and the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV).

[0010]The descriptive matter which follows pertains to ‘IFG Twenty-three’ plants grown in the vicinity of Delano, Kern County, Calif. during 2014, and is believed to apply to plants of the variety grown under similar conditions of soil and climate elsewhere:

Abstract

This invention is a new and distinct grapevine variety denominated ‘IFG Twenty-three’. The new grapevine is characterized by producing naturally large seedless reddish black berries having a spherical shape with a mild fruity labrusca flavor somewhat similar to the Kyoho variety but smaller in size and seedless.

Description

[0001]Latin name of the genus and species claimed: Vitis interspecific hybrid.[0002]Variety denomination: ‘IFG Twenty-three’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION[0003]The new and distinct grapevine described and claimed herein originated from a hand pollinated cross of the 01032-067-202, an unnamed seedling selection from the IFG breeding program, and the Arkansas 2798 (non-patented, non-released interspecific selection) hybridized in May 2006. The abortive seed traces were subsequently embryo cultured and the resulting population of plants was planted in the field in April 2007. The present variety of grapevine was selected as a single plant in October 2008 and was first asexually propagated by hardwood cuttings in December 2008 near Delano, Kern County, Calif. The resulting propagules were planted during April 2009 near Delano, Kern County, Calif. and were found to reproduce true-to-type through at least two generations of asexual reproduction.BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION[0004]The new gr...
