Embodiment Construction

[0033] In order to fully understand the operation of the invention, a short review of control signaling and position estimation in general in cellular networks is first given.

[0034] In the main part of the detailed description, a system based on GSM technology is used as an exemplary embodiment. However, the basic idea of the invention is not restricted to the specifically described embodiments, but is generally applicable to many different cellular communication systems.

[0035] The management method according to the invention is mainly concerned with management in cellular mobile radio systems. GSM is the mobile wireless telephony standard used in the exemplary embodiments presented in this disclosure. However, the present invention is also applicable to other cellular mobile radio systems and their associated standards, such as those based on TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) and TDD (Time Division Duple...

Abstract

A virtual network is created by providing antennas (14A-C) controlled by the same radio access station (8) with control signals of virtual radio access stations. Sets of physical channels comprising the control signals are dedicated to the respective antennas (14A-C), while sets of physical channels comprising only traffic channels constitute common resources for more than one antenna. Preferably, the present invention is applied in antenna systems utilising common antenna cables (17), whereby the radio access station (8) is provided as a distributed means having a central broadcast control signal injector (74) and control signal selectors (28A-C) at the antennas (14A-C).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to cellular communication networks. Background of the invention [0002] The possibility to determine the location of a mobile device has enabled application developers and wireless network operators to offer location-based and location-aware services. Examples of these services are guidance systems, shopping assistance, friend finders and other information services that give mobile users information about their surroundings. [0003] In addition to commercial services, governments in some countries have also introduced requirements that network operators be able to determine the location of emergency calls. For example, a US government requirement (FCC E911) is that it must be possible to determine the location of a certain percentage of emergency calls. The requirements for an indoor environment are no different than those for an outdoor environment. [0004] In an outdoor environment, position estimation ca...
