Problems solved by technology

But it must be easily retrieved by a machine-readable retriever, stored in a database or printed in hard copy, yet it must not be readily available through an information source without permission
[0004] Another problem with engraving or embossing such information on the tire for marking is that during the life of the tire some of this data becomes illegible due to wear and damage to the tire, preventing subsequent retrieval of all information from the tire. Data are needed, especially as tires age

Embodiment Construction

[0026] One form of the improved system for marking tires of the present invention is shown schematically in figure 1 , and generally expressed as 1. System 1 includes: Generally, 3 refers to the first station (station), which is called the reservation center and barcode reader station; 5 refers to the second station, which is called the observation station; 7 refers to the third station The position is called the sign and verification position. All stations are connected to conveying means, indicated generally at 9, such as conveyors or other equipment, for moving the vulcanized tires 10 between the two stations.

[0027] The station 3 includes a barcode reader 11 for reading the markings contained on a conventional barcode strip 13 , as shown in FIG. 5 , which has been attached to the tire upstream of the station 3 . The barcode strip 13 contains various coded indexes or information, such as the tire type, the respective serial number of the tire, the specific manufacturer ...

Abstract

The present invention provides a system and associated method of marking a molded vehicle tire with laser engraved information to provide both human visible and machine readable data concerning the tire. Information contained in a barcode on the tire is read at a first station and supplied to a control unit. The physical location of human visible information previously molded into the tire is read from the tire at a second station and supplied to the control unit which uses this information to position a laser located at a third station for engaging additional human visible information pertaining to the manufacture of the tire adjacent the existing visible information to satisfy the Department of Transportation (DOT) tire marking requirements. The additional information also can be laser engraved into the tire in a machine readable encoded format, such as 2D symbols, for subsequent control and verification throughout the life of the tire.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to vehicle tires and in particular to marking tires to meet government requirements while providing each tire with other details and historical data about it. Background technique [0002] Vehicle tires, particularly those intended for road use, are required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to be marked on the outer surface of one of their sidewalls, usually adjacent the bead, with certain visually identifiable data and some human-readable symbols. Historically, the data required to be molded into the sidewall included the specific manufacturer's code that manufactured the tire, the tire size, the type or type of tire, and the day and year the tire was molded. This coded information, in the form of human readable numbers and / or letters, is easily applied to the tire during the molding process by placing an engraved strip piece on the inside of the tire curing mold. Such code markings do not change significa...
